I'm still quite new to London, having moved here in October. It's so massive in comparison, and I'm still finding my way around. I love to explore new places by running and exploring them - it not only keeps your run interesting, but you get to know the city better too!
Whether you like short and quick or long and slow, there's definitely something for everyone in London. Personally, I love the parks and the sightseeing element of running in London, it's something you don't get as much of in other cities.
London, the capital of the United Kingdom (UK), is home to about 8.5million people (12.5% of the UK’s population). Set on the river Thames, London is home to numerous landmark attractions, including the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. It's history goes back until the roman empire, who founded the then-called Londinium. Nowadays, it belongs to the world leading financial centres and is the world's most-visited city, because of its history and culture.
London has a unique identity – for a city so urbanised, there’s still lots of green space. Whether you’re someone who loves to hit the trails and conquer hills, or someone who likes to hit the pavement, there’s something for everyone. As the city is set along the river, you get the choice to go for flat and fast runs, or to go explore the concrete jungle.
On the other hand, London offers free 5k time trails all over the city! Every Saturday morning, masses of runners take part in one of the 45 Parkruns that take place in Greater London. Alternatively, on Thursday evenings at 6.30-8.30pm, head to Paddington Recreation Ground (W9 1PD) for a free track session with Track Mafia.
I’ve lived in London since November 2015, so I haven’t quite experienced all it has to offer, but I’ll show you some of my favourite routes. Most of the routes start and finish at tube stations, because they’re easy to get to and well labeled!
Of course, I believe the best way to get to know a place is by running around, but if none of these routes take your fancy simply lace up your trainers and get out there – there’ll always be a tube station nearby to get you home quickly and easily (just don’t forget your oyster/contactless card!).
I’ve run quite a long way along the Thames, and where you go really depends on where you’re staying. My two favourite routes are West Thames and Central Thames:

An absolute must-see for any running/royal fan! Not only is this the house of the most famous family in the world, but it’s also the backdrop to the world-famous London Marathon finish line! It’s free to go and look at, and you might even get lucky with your timings and get to see the changing of the guards.

One of the best ways to explore London’s skyline, is to see it from the air. This is a very popular tourist attraction so either book your tickets in advance or go in the evening. From your little pod you can see the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Shard and other landmark attractions.

Not only is the Shard beautiful to look at, but you can actually explore the London skyline from the top too! Treat yourself to dinner at the top of the Shard or a sunrise/sunset yoga class at the Shard – you won’t be disappointed by the views!

Discover some of the world’s most impressive and amazing animals at London Zoo. From tiny insects to elephants and lions, the London Zoo is the place to go for people interested in wildlife. Not only do you get to see these animals close up, but you can learn about them too!
